Tankless or "on-demand" water heaters are ideal for their efficiency, space savings, and overall long-term value, whereas conventional tank heaters are usually less expensive up front and simpler to install. Other considerations for a tankless vs. conventional heater:
Endless Hot Water
Tankless heaters heat water as it’s needed, so you don’t run out during long showers or back-to-back use. Traditional tanks can empty and need time to reheat.
Energy Efficiency & Lower Bills
Tank heaters keep water hot all day, even when you’re not using it. Tankless units only heat water when needed, which can reduce energy use and lower utility bills over time.
Longer Lifespan
Tank water heater: ~8–12 years
Tankless water heater: ~15–20 years
That means fewer replacements in the long run.
Space-Saving Design
Tankless systems are compact and often wall-mounted, making them ideal for smaller homes, apartments, or utility closets.
Reduced Risk of Leaks
No large storage tank means less risk of tank corrosion, bursting, or flooding.
Precise Temperature Control
Many tankless systems allow digital temperature settings, providing more consistent and customizable hot water.
Environmentally Friendly
Using less energy and lasting longer makes tankless heaters a more eco-friendly option.
When a Conventional Tank Might Be Better
A traditional tank heater may still be preferable if:
Upfront cost is a major concern (tankless units cost more initially)
The home has low hot-water demand
Electrical or gas upgrades would be expensive
Friendly reminder: This is what can happen when you have unlicensed contractors doing work on your house. The handyman who was doing work on this water heater didn’t seal the gas pipes correctly and burned half of the garage down. We were contracted to go in and restore everything back to new, but again, this is just a reminder: always hire licensed contractors.
